Strategic Coordination and Integration Hub

The Strategic Coordination and Integration Hub is based at UKCEH, Wallingford. It provides support to the Flagships and Themes, and oversees the day-to-day running of the Programme.

Programme Leader: Dr Nick Isaac

Nick is a macroecologist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, where he leads the Biodiversity Monitoring and Analysis Group. He works at the interface between ecological theory, statistical methods, and policy-relevant evidence. His research focuses on four interlinked themes: (1) developing and testing quantitative methods for biodiversity science (e.g. occupancy–detection models and hierarchical Bayesian approaches to mitigate bias in ecological data), (2) quantifying long-term biodiversity change and understanding its drivers, (3) projecting future biodiversity metrics under environmental change scenarios, and (4) producing evidence for policy through partnerships with government agencies, developing biodiversity indicators and targets. Nick is Principal Investigator of the NERC-funded GLiTRS (Global Insect Threat-Response Synthesis) consortium, which aims to assemble a global view on insect population trends. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles across ecology, statistics and biodiversity science, including contributions to Trends in Ecology & Evolution, Nature Ecology & Evolution, and Biological Reviews. Nick also collaborates with national and international agencies: he serves on the European Commission expert group on pollinating insects, and on DEFRA’s UK biodiversity expert committee to ensure that policy and monitoring align with best practice. His methodological innovations help reconcile uneven, noisy ecological data to deliver robust biodiversity indicators and projections. Through co-design with stakeholders, Nick’s work contributes to translating complex models into usable metrics and decision support tools for biodiversity planning, monitoring, and conservation interventions.
