Mobilising greater private investment for nature

The UK Government's Environmental Improvement Plan commits to mobilising greater private investment for nature, including the development of Nature-Positive Transition Pathways for key sectors of the UK economy.

Over the past nine months, IFB partner, UKCEH, the Green Finance Institute, and WWF have worked with businesses, financial institutions, NGOs, environmental agencies and the UK Government to develop a practical methodology for creating these pathways.

Funded by Defra and the Natural Environment Research Council, the project has benefited from significant input from the IFB Programme.

The launch event introduced the methodology, explaining how Nature-Positive Transition Pathways can be developed, what they are designed to achieve, and how they can support better decision-making across government, business and finance. Presentations were given by the report's authors, members of the methodology team, and representatives from the project's advisory committee, including experts from the UK Government, the finance sector, and industry.

Dr Nick Isaac, Leader of the IFB Programme said:

"Nature-Positive Transition Pathways represent a step forward for business transition planning. They provide a practical framework to help businesses, investors and policymakers understand what a nature-positive future looks like for different sectors, and how to get there. This methodology is the product of exceptional collaboration across government, academia, finance and industry, and provides a strong foundation for the pilot work that now begins."

The publication of the methodology marks the first step in developing Nature-Positive Transition Pathways for the UK economy. Over the coming months, the project partners will test the methodology in detail, whilst also fundraising for a full program to develop transition pathways for the agrifood, water and built environment sectors.
